Retired CUNA Mutual President & CEO Robert L. Curry Dies
Company Achieved Rapid Growth During His 15-Year Leadership
MADISON, WI – Retired CUNA Mutual Group President and CEO Robert L. Curry, who led the company during a time of expansion in the 1970s and '80s, died Thursday, Sept. 20, in Madison following a heart attack. He was 84.
Curry was named the company's fourth CEO in 1973, succeeding Charles F. Eikel, Jr. He remained in that position until he retired in October 1988 and was succeeded by Richard M. Heins. Curry presided over a period of tremendous growth for CUNA Mutual. Company assets grew from $152 million to $1.35 billion, and the number of employees increased from about 400 employees to more than 3,000 worldwide, including 1,900 in Madison.
Curry also oversaw the expansion of CUNA Mutual's Mineral Point Road campus, which, in 1973, consisted solely of the original building at 5910 Mineral Point Rd. By 1980, the Credit Union Center campus had been constructed, including an 800-seat cafeteria, 175-seat auditorium, and headquarters for CUNA Mutual, the Credit Union National Association, and the World Council of Credit Unions.
Through his leadership role as CUNA Mutual CEO, Curry was instrumental in the promotion and development of the worldwide credit union movement, said Don Davidson, CUNA Mutual vice president of Credit Union System Relations and a longtime acquaintance. “Employees often described Bob as a great leader, one who cared for people and possessed great intelligence,” Davidson said.
Curry is survived by his wife, Muriel, three children, nine grandchildren and two brothers. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Segoe Rd., Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northwoods Wildlife Center, 8683 Blumstein Rd., Minocqua, WI, 54548, or Macular Degeneration Research, University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, 2870 University Ave., Suite 102, Madison, WI 53705.
CUNA Mutual Group is the leading provider of financial products and services to credit unions and their members worldwide. More information on the company is available on the company’s Web site at www.cunamutual.com.
