CUNA Mutual Goes Above and Beyond Insurance Protection Products

Since beginning operations in 1935, CUNA Mutual Group has a proud history of partnering with all segments of the credit union movement and the communities in which its employees live and work in a concerted effort to help credit unions grow and prosper, and communities to thrive. This partnership clearly exceeds the boundaries of our core insurance protection lines of business.

Some examples:

CUNA Mutual invests more than $35 million each year in the credit union movement. The CUNA Mutual Group Foundation makes financial and in-kind donations to the National Credit Union Foundation to assist in the foundation’s work to support financial literacy, and to various scholarship funds to help small credit unions send staff to CUNA management schools.

Many of the greatest community needs are unanticipated. Even in times of disaster or calamity, the CUNA Mutual Group Foundation is quick to respond. In 2006, we contributed $100,000 to Tsunami Relief and $177,000 to hurricane relief efforts.

CUNA Mutual's field staff is a sponsor of the Carolinas Cup Golf Championship, a charity fund-raiser in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Proceeds from the event go to the Victory Junction Gang Camp, a year-round NASCAR-themed facility in Randleman, North Carolina, designed for chronically and terminally ill children from the Carolinas and Virginia.

CUNA Mutual provides substantial support for the National Credit Union Foundation and the Children's Miracle Network. We are a major sponsor of the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run each April in Washington, D.C.

CUNA Mutual’s Legislative Affairs staff actively works to monitor Congressional actions related to credit unions and the financial services industry. Over the years, we have taken leadership roles in lobbying efforts and campaigns to preserve the tax-exempt status of credit unions, RESPA mortgage lending reform, the IRS's Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) issue, and bankruptcy legislation.  For UBIT alone, CUNA Mutual has already contributed approximately $2 million, more than any other credit union organization. The company is currently working with other industry leaders to respond to proposed Fed changes to Regulation Z, which could have a significant impact on the lending business of credit unions.

CUNA Mutual is a major supporter of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions’s mission to support credit unions serving low-income consumers.

CUNA Mutual contributes significant financial and staffing resources to the Filene Research Institute and sponsors numerous annual awards (eg. Excellence in Lending), and recognition programs honoring credit unions that provide exemplary service.

CUNA Mutual has agreements with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the World Council of Credit Unions (the national and international credit union trade associations) to help develop and nurture the domestic credit union movement and those overseas.

CUNA Mutual works closely with the corporate credit union network to support its important role in ensuring a safe, sound credit union industry, and we dedicate staff to identify opportunities to collaborate and partner with these important institutions.

CUNA Mutual also dedicates resources to support the more than 40 national credit union trade organizations in their efforts to educate, strengthen and support the credit union industry.

CUNA Mutual has long-standing partnerships with Leagues. These partnerships provide resources to reinforce local efforts and enhance programs Leagues offer to credit unions. In total, these partnerships represent major support for Leagues and their activities.

CUNA Mutual is a top corporate donor to The United Way in Madison, Wisconsin and Waverly, Iowa, where two of our offices are located.

CUNA Mutual operates a “Dollars for Doers” program that provides cash grants to support our employees’ volunteer efforts at non-profit organizations of their choosing. This program is available to home office staff and field representatives across the United States.
