Advocacy That Supports the Credit Union Movement and Our Communities
People helping people is the credit union way. And, for us, being the people who help people is the only way we know how to operate. We have contributed significantly to support the tax exemption for our member-owned credit unions, including issues of legislation and regulation. We advocate for credit unions on such matters as RESPA mortgage-lending reform, curtailing the scope of UBIT (toward which we have already contributed more than $2 million), and protection against plastic-card fraud.
We continue our strong financial support of:
-
CUNA, to help credit unions nationwide remain strong and grow.
-
World Council of Credit Unions, to develop and nurture the credit union movement internationally.
-
National Federation of Development Credit Unions, to assure better availability of financial resources for low-income consumers.
-
African American Credit Union Coalition, in support of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial project.
-
Filene Research Institute, to provide financial and staffing resources for independent research, analysis, and innovation.
-
America’s Credit Union Museum, to remember the history of the movement.
-
State Credit Union Leagues, to provide resources to reinforce local efforts and League programs.
-
Children’s Miracle Network, to support children’s hospitals nationwide.
These are just a few of our commitments. Through the CUNA Mutual Foundation, we also routinely donate money to relief efforts for disaster victims. Our foundation also donates money and in-kind assistance to strengthen and support local programs for at-risk youth. The company funds $500 grants that go to nonprofit organizations where our employees volunteer at least 50 hours a year.
Contributions to Credit Union Success
In 2007, CUNA Mutual paid out $265.3 million in reimbursements and experience refunds to credit unions. It also provided $32.1 million in league reimbursements to support member credit union activities and another $4 million in contributions to, and investments in, credit union organizations such as CUNA, the Natonal Credit Union Foundation, the Filene Research Institute, and the World Council of Credit Unions.
Our History
Pioneers of the credit union movement established the CUNA Mutual Insurance Society in 1935. It is the parent organization of all companies that together form the CUNA Mutual Group.
